Before you call the HelpDesk

If you've ever had problems with your internet connection you know how frustrating it can be.  In order for us to solve your computer problems as quickly as possible, here are a few general steps to follow before contacting the HelpDesk.

  • Be at the computer.  Have it turned on and running.

NOTE:  If you are connected through DSL or Cable modem service, then you should have the program open that you are calling about.  If you are connected through Dial-up service, then you should have your computer on, but not logged in when you call us (unless you have a separate phone line for the Internet).

  • Know what programs you are using.

What Browser (i.e. Netscape, Internet Explorer)?
What E-mail Client (i.e. Eudora, Netscape Mail, Outlook Express)?

  • Write down error messages if any.

  • Know what your username is, email address and password.

  • Try to outline the problem.

    Is it an e-mail problem?
    Browser Problem?
    Connection problem?

  • Describe when this is happening.

When did it last work correctly?
    When did the problem begin?
Does the problem only happen at certain times?

  • Let us know if you have a separate phone line for your modem or if you have a cell phone.  (Dial-up only)
